Good Friday

So Good Friday 2025 is passing with  quietness given to such an important religious occasion. Yet the usual customs are tinged with the sadness of the passings of our dear parents. My daughter’s family is having Easter lunch on Sunday, and I offered to prepare the coloured eggs. In my case, there was none of the leaf in the stocking that dear Baba mastered as she boiled traditional eggs and turned them into masterpieces, eggs with plenty of strength for knocking and clashing, where we pitted our strength against each other around the Easter table. Yet my eggs, provided by my husband after shopping. so easily cracked.  I got better as I went along, warming them gently and slowly. I found one of Baba’s old white pirex egg plates, trimmed with gold and arranged the colourful eggs around. They sit and wait until Sunday when our worlds reawaken with festivities.  This Easter both Orthodox and Roman Catholics share the same date, which is lovely, so the Gregorian and Julian  calendars unite after the planetary alignment, quite a rare occasion. In our tradition, I have purchased plenty of chocolate bunnies for the grandchildren and the usual chocolates for the adults.
