Though I am first and foremost a writer and secondary teacher, it is great to be involved in bookbinding, a real adventure. I have completed the short introductory course. So I have bound a few books. I highly recommend bookbinding as it is all about measurement, binding and challenge. The amazing feeling we have when we have completed our first handstitched books is remarkable.
One of my favourite skills is acrylic marbling. The end papers in a text are often marbled. Last year I wrote an article for Signature about my adventures learning to marble. I am yet to master this fabulous artform, but have enjoyed the various steps involved.
Conservation is high on the agenda, so if you have any collectible books you would like repaired, join a bookbinding organisation and come along to meetings, or contact them for advice about repairing your valuable text. I am not available to teach this area at present.
